あの「となりのトトロ」の話は全て小説家である父親の空想である。
すでにさつきもメイも死んでおり、生きていたらこんな風になって欲しかった、という父親の願望であるという。

さつきとメイがトトロと一緒に木の上でオカリナを吹いているシーン、それを父親がチラッと木を見やり、少し満足げにして机に向かう姿が全てを物語っているという。
（田舎に越してくる前にすでに２人は死んでいたという説も。）
