サツキとメイはもともとは.....


宮崎によれば、当初女の子がトトロに出会う場面について、雨のバス停の時と昼間の時との2つの場面を思いついてしまい悩んでいたところ、映画化決定の1年前に入って主人公を2人の姉妹にすることを思いつき、サツキとメイの2人が生まれたという。

一方、現在のスタジオジブリのプロデューサーである鈴木敏夫は、2008年7 月12日放送の特別番組において、「もともと同時上映の『火垂るの墓』ともども60分の尺の予定が、『火垂るの墓』が90分に延びることになったので、じゃあトトロも80 分以上にしようって話になった。どうやって20分も延ばすか悩んでいたが、宮崎監督が『女の子1人増やせば20分くらい延びるだろう』と言い出し2人になった」と語っている。
